The Louisville Lightning is the newest professional sports team in Kentucky. The team began competition in the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro) on November 13, 2009. After completing a competitive 16 game season schedule, with 9 home matches at Mockingbird Valley Soccer complex, the team finished with a 12-5 record. At this time, the Lightning is in need of several student interns to help the organization continue to grow during the spring and summer off-season. The positions listed below will provide volunteers with an opportunity to gain hands on experience and learn the elements necessary to create a professional sports franchise from the ground up.
IDEAL CANDIDATES MUST:
Be willing to contribute minimum of 10-20 hours/week during the spring and summer (adjustable)
Be currently enrolled in a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate program (no required major necessary)
Have an understanding of the sport industry and a desire to begin a career related to sports management, sales, advertising, business, communications, or management
Have transportation to and from the Lightning offices
Have daily access to a computer (preferably a laptop that can be brought to work)
Be willing and able to participate in some physical activity including but not limited to: Lift 25-50lbs, standing for long periods of time (1-4 hours at a time), and working outside during hot summer weather.
Coaching Internship
Description:
Have you dreamed about becoming a sports coach at the professional, intercollegiate, or high school level? Regardless of your sport of choice, it is important to gain experience working with a variety of teams, organizing athletes, and managing administrative duties. This internship provides the opportunity to learn the intricacies of coaching through working with the Louisville Lightning U-23 Men’s Team. Interns will have the opportunity to set up practice plans, evaluate players and opponents, conduct marketing initiatives, engage sponsors, and gain insight into the intricacies of a professional sports organization. Gain hands on experience while learning from some of the top soccer coaches in Louisville.
Additional Requirements:
A demonstrated passion for coaching.
Multi Cultural Development Internship
Description:
The diverse population of the United States is expanding and soccer is becoming more relevant among today’s dynamic cultural landscape. Improve your resume by helping the Louisville Lightning develop initiatives to reach out to the various cultures in the Louisville area. Emphasis is placed on grass-roots development of relationships and bilingual advertising opportunities.
Additional Requirements:
Preferably fluent in two or more languages.
Sports Communication Internship
Description:
Managing the communication between a professional team and its various publics is an essential component of any successful sport organization. Interns will develop and implement communications strategies for a professional sport organization. Each student will have the opportunity to add to their resume by learning and working on a variety of tasks including PR campaigns, press releases, advertising initiatives, marketing techniques, development of the official team Web site and other Internet related applications.
Additional Requirements:
Excellent oral and written communication skills, proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to conduct basic quantitative and qualitative research.
Event Operations Internship
Description:
Countless opportunities exist in the sport industry for workers with a demonstrated ability to successfully manage special events and continuing programs. This internship provides students with an opportunity to plan, execute, and evaluate various events essential to the off-season promotion of a professional sport team including operations with the Kentucky Derby Festival, Balloon Race, Lightning Summer Camps, player appearances, game day operations for summer games, and preparation for the 2010-2011 season.
Additional Requirements:
Successful candidates should have the ability to troubleshoot problems and be willing to conduct risk management assessments.
Sales Internship
Description:
Interns will plan and implement strategies aimed at increasing revenue for a professional sport organization through the use of ticket sales, sponsorship development, and external programming. Creative individuals will be given opportunities to develop new programs for adult and youth fan clubs, sponsor retention, and season ticketholders.
Additional Requirements:
Creativity and an outgoing personality.
Accounting Internship
Description:
Professional sport teams are in need of employees capable of interpretting the bottom line and its effect on an organization. This internship helps students with an interest in accounting, finance, math, and/or management learn how to develop budgets, project revenue, and interpret financial data.
Additional Requirements:
Preferably, successful candidates should be majoring in accounting, finance, or management and have a desire to develop and implement accounting practices for a professional sport team.
